Nepali Minister Resigns

Rijwan Ansari maintains he had to resign “on my moral ground. The security condition is deteriorating, and I couldn’t help improve the situation.”

But the minister of state home affairs didn’t stop there when he quit his post late Wednesday. While his boss, Home Minister Bhim Rawal, continued claiming to be working hard on a security plan, in the aftermath of several high-profile murders, Ansari called Rawal out for irresponsibility and ineffective use of Nepal’s police force.

Social networking sites in Nepal

The craze about social networking sites in Nepal is increasing. Social networking sites like facebook offer an opportunity to interact, share information and meet famous people; this must be the reason why the number of Nepali facebook users is increasing.

It (Facebook) has made Nepali more connected to themselves and the outside world,´ said Sarad Pradhan, media consultant of Nepal Tourism Board and regular user of facebook. Pradhan started using facebook in 2007. Pradhan said, ´I am using facebook at least for eight hours a day.´

It is interesting to know that people who were skeptical about social networking sites are also joining facebook and one of them is Gunaraj Luitel, associate editor of Nagarik daily. ´I was aware about the benefit of this networking site, but remained skeptical to use it´, said Luitel, who started facebooking some months ago. Luitel has found that social networking sites users are increasing, he has noticed much people joining in 2008.

Exclusive Interview

Nepal´s Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal said Maoist combatants will also be merged in new security organs and only some percentage of Maoists combatants will be integrated in the Nepal Army. In an exclusive interview with Rajneesh Bhandari, PM Nepal talked about the possibilities of using the Maoist Combatants as the border security forces and industrial security forces.

PM Nepal said, ´Regarding the integration, certain percentage of combatants will be integrated into security organs whether it be the Nepali army, or police, or in the new structure that may be the border security force or the economic security force.´ Maoists are demanding that their cadres should be integrated as soon as possible in the Nepal Army. The special committee formed by the government to rehabilitate, integrate and monitor the Maoists Combatants is yet to decide on this issue.

It´s not always ´Slumdog Millionaire´

Just near the famous Marina beach is Nochikuppam slum that houses 13 hundred huts where around 5 thousand people live below poverty level. Among them is 35 year old Nandani who sells fish to earn her living. The scorching heat of the summer makes her life more difficult as her husband can´t find fishes in the ocean. "We don´t have enough money to have two meals a day," says Nandani. She adds that "It´s difficult to run the family."

ALCOHOLISM: THE MAJOR PROBLEM

Nandani lives under the global poverty line with her three children and her husband. The family earns Rs 50 a day. But all the money is spent by her alcoholic husband. "My husband drinks all the time. Alcoholism has been one of the major problems in the area", says a concerned Nandani. The fishermen were enjoying playing cards in the afternoon while Nandani was speaking about the effects of alcohol in her family. Most of the fishermen seem to be drunk in the day time.

Living together!

The concept of living together is popular in western countries like America, United Kingdom and Australia. The concept adopted mainly by westerners is gaining popularity amongst Eastern countries as well and Nepali youths are no exception to this. But the couples staying together are not found speaking openly about their relationship. The major reason behind it could be the fact that the issue has yet to gain legality socially and religiously. Living Together means living without getting bonded in any cultural or legal provisions such as Marriage and sharing the bondage emotionally.

However Nepali youths living in foreign lands have already adopted the concept. Youths landing up in countries like Australia, America, United Kingdom and India for higher studies are in the line to adopting it. According to Bhuwaneshore Sharma, a Nepali Journalist based in Australia, this concept is prevalent among some youngsters there.
